MARIGOT, Saint-Martin -- Lady Ruby Bute is doing what she does to the fullest extent: Teaching art and spinning yarns at her home and studio -- the Silk Cotton Grove Art Gallery -- attached Friar's Bay.

In her decades-long career, the artist-poet-storyteller has taught art to votaries children, troubled teens -- even prisoners -- but today she is holding court for a triplet of eager Canadians who are here for the local lore as much as the art instruction.

It's a hot day, but pleasantly reduce beneath the twisted branches of the towering silk cotton wood tree that dwarfs Bute's light-hearted yellow home. We visit a bit on the porch before moving to the gazebo to start our painting session.

Bute tells us her ties to this land -- once visited by pirates and populated by slaves -- go back many generations. Predilection forward, she confides in a whisper that the land still has many stories to tell those who pay attention to carefully.

REDLANDS - Seven homes, prominent to contemporary, will be showcased in the 2012 Camellia Luncheon.

The luncheon, one of the longest match events in Redlands, is in its 61st year, and the organizer of the event - the Assistance Associate of Redlands - is inviting the community to attend a gourmet lunch that will be served at midday in each of the seven homes.

Money raised through the event helps the Succour League carry out its mission to "serve the community through volunteer projects dedicated to children and families."

Ticket prices are $85 to feast in any of the three Patron Homes and $50 for any of the other four homes.

The Patron Homes put forward champagne, an additional food course, live music and an colloquial fashion show, which is presented this year by Karen Kane of the Cabazon Outlets. The show will participate items from the Karen Kane spring and summer catalogs.

Everyone attending will have the occasion to win prizes at all the homes. Prizes include a one-week condominium
