Chocolate-covered bacon? Peanut butter and jelly fudge?
When it comes to perfecting chocolate and expanding its use in
Siouxland, nothing can top the labour done at two longtime
candymakers in downtown Sioux City.
Generations of kids have grown up addicted to the salty-musical
flavor of the great American PB&J sandwich. So it was
inevitable that it would one day be incorporated into a bon-bons,
which brings us to the PB&J fudge that has graced the candy
counter of Palmer's Old Tyme Sweetmeats Shoppe, 405 Wesley Parkway.
It's an experiment that worked, said Jon Sadler, retail forewoman
of the Candy Shoppe for 15 years. It was suggested by his daughter,
Jayna Sadler, a fudge baker at the shoppe.
"It's genre of a new twist on an old favorite. The first time we
tried it, it didn't come out honesty," he said. And we did it in a
two-layer thing. So we tried a different grape ... there's not very
many grape flavorings out there. Basically, you've got anaemic fudge
mixed with peanut butter (that) makes the peanut butter part of it,
and then grape flavorings hybrid with white fudge for the grape
jelly part."
