The denouement is that before you can say "How big does my bum really look in this?" flapper dresses will be ubiquitous. The shrill street is already there: witness this sumptuous version from Jigsaw. Not cheap, particularly, at over £300, but a snip compared with the designer versions - and rather nicely cut, for a Twenties frock.
Note the caveat. For while some women state by this shape, insisting that its body-skimming lines are both flattering and elegantly smug, others, like me, can't help thinking that unless you perfect a crablike carriage that means people only ever get to see you in a three-quarters-profile, your hips are going to look the measure of Madison Square Garden.
On the other hand, it is liberating to wear something this discontinuous without having to resort to an extra-large kaftan.
I love the way this clothe shimmies, twinkles and allows for Christmas lunch (plus tea, supper, casually munchies and most of a Quality Street bumper pack).
It is glamorous yet cardi-pally. It is also the perfect outfit for a Downton-themed Christmas.
