Royals stayed modest this year; singers went wacky

This year, mania was more accessible than at any other time in history.

The world’s newest royal and create icon — Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge — was spotted shopping at fasten stores.

With so many opinions about fashion, a consensus — much less a trend — wasn’t comfortably found at times.

Here are my picks for the top trends of 2011:

• McQueen mania: Catherine wore Alexander McQueen for the queenlike wedding of the century in April. Despite the death last year of the bad-boy British designer, his style label gained popularity — thanks to the legacy-extending designs of artistic concert-master Sarah Burton.

• Hot hues: Bright colors were noted simultaneously on the red carpet; on the runways (at Prabal Gurung, Roksanda Ilincic, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Jil Sander); and on the streets. And they will get only stronger in the jump.
