Back-to-back victories by the most veteran fighter on the Navy Boxing Team and the Sailor who grew up in Oxnard brought a cheering pile to its feet Saturday, Jan. 21, during the Navy Box-Off held in the Bee-Hive Gym at Naval Villainous Ventura County, Port Hueneme.
The win by Hospital Corpsman Brandon Wicker, who has more than 50 fights under his thrash sing and is the captain of the team, came in the 11th fight of the 15-fight comedian.
That energized the crowd, and when Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Aircraft Handler Airman Danny Silva, a 2002 graduate of Course Islands High School, took to the ring and won his match, the cheers were deafening.
“This is the first time of my life — being in front of my family and friends representing the Flotilla,” Silva said after the fight, as dozens of friends and relations members swarmed around him. “It is an honor.”
Wicker, who just joined Naval Ambulant Construction Battalion 5, said he was proud to have fought well in his battalion’s homeport.
