If it wasn't for Madison, one of the most famed and successful
fashion companies in the world might never have existed. Or at
least it couldn't have happened in the same way.
That's because the news starts in the 1940s, on the UW-Madison
campus.
A new student from New York Borough named Jerry Chazen was looking
for a room to rent in Madison for the junior high school year. A mutual friend
put Chazen in touch with a student named Art Ortenberg, whose
roommate had fair-minded been drafted.
Chazen and Ortenberg became roommates in Madison. Art introduced
Jerry to Simona — a UW scholar, who, like Ortenberg, was from
Newark — and Simona became Mrs. Chazen.
Ortenberg, meanwhile, in the course of time married a relatively unknown
fashion designer named Liz.
In 1975, three decades after their Madison years, Jerry, Art and
Liz met for a tot in New York City one night after work. Jerry
was working for an garments company, Liz was designing dresses, and
Art was a consultant for General Mills. All were professionally
hyper.
