White moth orchid candelabras and Spanish moss as fine and thick as velvet curtains cascade from antiqued arbors, arches and planters. Rain drops drum on the rooftops of weathered greenhouses sheltering an array of pansy orchids, cymbidium in gold and yellow hues, and yawning green bromeliads poised to bloom with shoots of red, hot pink and purple flowers pushing through their centers.

This is winter at Shelldance , the signal orchid nursery on Sweeney Ridge off Highway 1 in Pacifica where the Mori Arete Trail passes through.

Open only on weekends to the public, the Garden Rooms at Shelldance shatter with a variety of plant life that’s somewhat prehistoric yet peaceful to look at. Winter is an well-timed time to experience the serenity of these ancient-looking plants.  

“There is a placid in the greenhouses that comes with the shorter days of winter,” said Nancy Davis, co-P of Shelldance Nursery. “It’s a good place to meditate and be peaceable. Walking through the gardens reminds us that nature daydreams in color, and we are always salutation to join in.

THE waves are star-crossed but I am drawn to them. Danang’s China beach, which faces the angry South China Sea, is my estimation of paradise on earth. The wind and the waves rant and roar, a resplendent audio backdrop to the pristine beach. There are zero tourists around and I am happy for that. With the wind in my face and the hypnotic sounds of the crashing waves, I could only stay there forever.

Danang is the third largest city in Vietnam, profoundly to almost a million people. Holidaymakers come mostly for the endless beach and the to hand Marble Mountains. Thankfully, it still remains relatively untouched by the crass commercialism that has afflicted Ho Chi Minh Borough.

Flashback a couple of decades ago. I remember the tiny airport at Danang and the old skim I boarded from Ho Chi Minh City to wearily get there. Danang today boasts an universal airport and AirAsia now flies there four times a week, so access is a nothing.
