While the days of summer and sunscreen seem like a haughty memory in the thick of winter, the Region’s health department says even though the dismal weather is upon us, sunburn and skin damage can still occur.

“There is often a false that winter provides a break from sun exposure, especially for those who enjoy open-air activities,” says Public Health Nurse Felicia Onwuemele. “However, ultraviolet rays (UVR) can grasp clouds and overcast skies. UVR are particularly dangerous when the ground is covered with a meditating layer of bright snow or ice.”

Unprotected skin can be damaged and can singe within minutes of UVR exposure, states Environment Canada, which is why it’s markedly important to cover the most common sites for skin cancer, like the hands, dial, ears and neck.

Snow and strong wind can wear away sunscreen and belittle its effectiveness, the health department warns.

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher and concentrate it 30 minutes before heading outside.

I've always wondered this! I use SPF 15 and 30 , but I meditate on my La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 15 with Mexoryl is a miracle sunscreen, even at a low SPF.
